Well, it happened. The USWNT beat China 2-0 and Canada beat Sweden 1-0. The US has a better head-to-head record against Canada, so the US wins.
All good, right? I hope so. I hope that Pia Sundhage took note of what went wrong against Sweden (who ended up in last place) and fixed it. That is, after all, the point of friendlies and otherwise meaningless tournaments like this one.
However, since 2003, the USWNT has had a habit of going into the World Cup with a very good record and then losing in the semifinals. In 2007, the US has a ridiculously good record before getting their hats handed to them by Marta and Brazil. I’m sure Sundhage is aware of this history. I want to know what she’s going to do to prevent it.
